Description of the project

Situated on the northern shore of the IJ-lake in Amsterdam behind Central Station, the Holiday Inn Express hotel offers stunning views over the city and is the largest Holiday Inn Express Hotel in Europe.

Designed by DeDato Ontwerpers en Architecten, the stability of the building was a challenge. The two towers of the hotel have curtain walls all around so that only internal walls could be used for stability. Reinforcements in the pile foundation and basement were required to give the slender north tower sufficient stiffness.

Guardian SunGuard eXtra Selective (SNX) 50 was selected for the glazed curtain wall facades. This coated solar protective glass combines high solar protection with high light transmission, while offering even better colour consistency and enhanced internal and external reflections. The glass helps reduce energy costs by lowering the demand for artificial lighting, air conditioning and heating. SNX 50 has a highly desirable, consistent, neutral, transparent appearance – regardless of the viewing angle. Both internal and external coloured reflections have been optimised, adding a much more neutral tone to the glass when viewed from the inside or outside of the building.
